JOHN HICKMAN
John is a working-class writer and producer based in North Shields. He's written for a number of TV series including EastEnders, The Dumping Ground and the BAFTA-nominated Silverpoint; and developed projects with partners such as BFI, BBC, Clerkenwell Films, Shudder Films, Lime Pictures and Company Pictures. He has been selected for several high-profile mentoring schemes including programmes with Guiding Lights and BAFTA, as well as the BBC Writersroom. His TV script, The Things, was a winner of the BAFTA Rocliffe writing competition.
As a theatre producer, John has developed work alongside leading new writing partners such as Live Theatre, Papatango Theatre, and the National Theatre. Formerly a social worker, John has extensive experience working with marginalised young people, and a PhD with a focus on the on-screen fictional depiction of looked-after children. Having grown up on a council estate in Wolverhampton, John is passionate about representing lower socio-economic voices with empathy and authenticity. John is also a huge fan of genre and his work is all about elevating the ordinary into something extra.
